PrimusGFS v4.0: What Changes and How to Prepare

Short answer: PrimusGFS v4.0 is the next version of the GFSI-recognized food safety certification program for fresh produce. It keeps the modular structure and audit duration of v3.2, reduces the total number of questions, and adds new requirements on food safety culture, crisis management, agricultural water, harvest equipment sanitation and traceability aligned with FDA’s Food Traceability Rule (FSMA 204). Official v4.0 documents are published; the date when v4.0 becomes mandatory depends on GFSI benchmarking and should be confirmed on primusgfs.com.

    What is PrimusGFS?

PrimusGFS is a food safety certification program owned and managed by Azzule Systems. It is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and is widely requested by U.S. retailers, foodservice companies and distributors for fresh produce suppliers.

The program covers farms, greenhouses and indoor agriculture, harvest crews, packinghouses, cold storage, processing and distribution. Each operation is audited against a common Food Safety Management System (FSMS) module plus the modules that apply to its activities, such as farm operations, harvest crews, facilities (GMP) and HACCP or preventive controls. Certificates are valid for 12 months.

    Why a new version?

Version 4.0 updates the program to align with GFSI’s 2024 benchmarking requirements and current U.S. regulatory priorities, particularly the FDA Food Traceability Rule. It is a refinement, not a redesign: the structure and audit duration remain, and some requirements were merged or reworded. Industry analyses report about 6% fewer questions overall and about 20% fewer in the farm module.

Food safety culture: from statement to evidence

The most significant change is the requirement to demonstrate food safety culture. Under v4.0, a policy statement is not sufficient. Auditors will look for:

    • A written culture assessment plan covering communication, training, employee feedback and performance measurement
    • Records showing the assessment is carried out and reviewed periodically
    • Evidence that results lead to corrective actions

How v4.0 connects to FSMA 204

The FDA Food Traceability Rule requires operations that handle foods on the Food Traceability List, which includes many fresh produce items, to keep Key Data Elements for Critical Tracking Events. The compliance date is July 20, 2028. PrimusGFS v4.0 includes traceability verification aligned with FSMA 204 where applicable, so a v4.0 audit becomes an early check of an operation’s readiness.

    When does v4.0 apply?

Official v4.0 documents, including the General Regulations, were published by PrimusGFS in August 2025. Industry sources indicate that GFSI benchmarking is expected to conclude by the end of 2026 and that v4.0 audits will likely become mandatory in 2027. Exact effective and transition dates should always be confirmed on primusgfs.com and with your certification body.

    How to prepare

    1. Download the v4.0 documents and summary of changes from primusgfs.com.
    2. Run a gap review of your current FSMS against the new requirements, starting with Module 1.
    3. Build the food safety culture plan now, so that you have several months of records before the audit.
    4. Review agricultural water assessments from source to distribution.
    5. Test traceability with a mock recall that follows FSMA 204 Key Data Elements.
    6. Plan your audit window with your certification body, considering harvest season.
